Jim Ryan resigned as president of the University of Virginia on June 27, citing pressure from the federal government. Before announcing his resignation to the UVA community, Ryan addressed a crowd of supporters gathered outside his Carr’s Hill home.

L ast Friday, I received a message from James E. Ryan, president of the University of Virginia. At first, I thought it would be like countless other emails I have received over the years — in 1989, I defended my Ph.D. dissertation at UVa on resistance and collaboration in Vichy France — from my alma mater.
