State and local leaders across the country are bracing for a tidal wave of aggressive immigration policies and possible mass deportations that President Donald Trump has vowed to enact in the hours and days following his inauguration Monday.

The US president tasks the military with aiding border security, issues a ban on asylum and aims to restrict citizenship for children born on US soil.

WASHINGTON - Newly sworn-in U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he would declare illegal immigration a national emergency, send troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, and reinstate his "remain in Mexico" policy as part of a sweeping immigration crackdown.

The orders include declaring a national emergency to deploy military personnel to the border, suspending refugee resettlement and ending birthright citizenship.

Trump signed orders his officials called “common-sense immigration policies.” These include declaring a national emergency at the U.S. southern border, deploying armed forces, border wall construction, ending asylum and ending birthright citizenship to some children born in the U.S., among others.
