The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory at 3:22 a.m. EST on Monday valid from 7 a.m. EST until Tuesday 7 p.m. EST for Ionia, Eaton, Ingham and Jackson counties.

Extreme cold temperatures have settled in over most of the state. Winter storm warnings will go into effect on Tuesday. Precipitation — snow, sleet, freezing rain, or a wintry mix — will begin in southwest Alabama Tuesday morning and continue through the day, moving eastward.

With the chances of a historic Florida snow or ice storm inching upward, forecasters may issue a rare winter storm watch for a region more accustomed to squall lines and tropical threats.
