A member of Kyle Shanahan's staff at the San Francisco 49ers, declined an interview to become the head coach of the New York Jets for the 2025 NFL season.

Gang Green has hired Steve Wilks as defensive coordinator, sources confirm. NFL Network first announced the news of Wilks being hired by the Jets.

Brant Boyer was announced Monday as the 49ers’ new special teams coordinator, a role he held the past nine season with the Jets, where he overlapped and worked under coach Robert Saleh, who was re-hired Friday as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator.

Steve Wilks, who ran the Niners' defense in 2023 and was head coach of the Cardinals in 2018, has agreed to become the Jets' defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN.

Shanahan told reporters at his end of season press conference that he hoped Sorensen would stay on the staff, possibly as the special teams coordinator.
