Mandatory evacuations for more than 100,000 people remain in place for the wildfires, which started Jan. 7 amid a powerful windstorm that forecasters warned would be the worst the region has seen in more than a decade.

Containment grew on both the Eaton and the Palisades fires before anticipated dangerous winds started hitting the region. The Eaton fire, burning in Altadena and Pasadena, was 35% contained as of early Tuesday, Jan. 14, officials said, and the fire did not expand beyond the 14,117 acres reported burned as of Sunday.

Was the Palisades Fire caused by embers left over from another extinguished fire? Was Eaton the fault of power lines? It may take months before investigators know.
