In the final hours before Michigan's minimum wage was set to increase, lawmakers passed two bills that aimed to increase wages at a slightly slower rate.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed two bills on Friday modifying the upcoming changes to minimum wage and paid sick leave.

More than six years ago, committees gathered enough petition signatures to put minimum wage and sick leave proposals on the ballot in November 2018. However, Republican lawmakers adopted the measures before Election Day, keeping them off the ballot, and then returned after Election Day to significantly weaken the requirements.

Whitmer signed legislation on Friday to preserve Michigan’s lower minimum wage for tipped workers and to modify the law requiring most employers to provide paid sick leave.

Michigan tipped workers just saw the single-largest raise to their wages in state history. But it could have been higher.

Gretchen Whitmer told legislative leaders Wednesday that if an agreement to amend pending minimum wage and paid sick leave laws cannot be struck this week, they should consider delaying the laws until July 1 to buy more time for negotiations.
