Greece’s government declared a state of emergency on Santorini on Thursday after hundreds of undersea earthquakes shook the resort island for nearly a week. The ministry of civil protection’s announcement will provide authorities faster access to state resources.

After the emergency was declared on the Greek island, more than 11,000 people have been evacuated. The authorities are now reporting earthquakes in minute-by-minute intervals

The tourist hotspot has been rocked by days of seismic activity with thousands of earthquakes recorded since Friday. On Thursday evening, a 4.6 magnitude quake was recorded at 20:16 local time (18:00 GMT) in the sea between Santorini and another island, Amorgos, followed by a 4.2 magnitude quake roughly two hours later.
