“I didn’t realize that, as a 22 year old might not, that I was in Arnold Palmer’s backyard,” Nicklaus said. Palmer, of course, is from Latrobe, Pa., roughly an hour south of Pittsburgh.
And for Palmer, from nearby Latrobe, Pa., this was a home game. "I finished second (at the U.S. Open) in ‘60 and fourth in ‘61 and I sort of felt like this was my Open," Nicklaus said.

Palmer, age 64 at the time, was playing in his last tournament in the 1994 U.S. Open, and Carriage Limousine transported Palmer from his home to Oakmont every day by helicopter during the week.
Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer were rivals after Nicklaus won in a playoff at the U.S. Open in 1962. But over the years the two created a strong bond on and off the course.
