An IU spokesperson said the university system will see the creation of 27 new programs through mergers and consolidations.

The dramatic restructuring comes in response to a statute that aims to end programs that produce low numbers of graduates over a three-year period.

Because of a last minute addition to the state's budget bill, public universities in Indiana have cut departments. That includes the elimination or consolidation of departments in Southern Indiana.
