ATLANTA — On day two of the Georgia legislative session, lawmakers introduced at least eight bills relating to guns or school safety. The proposed legislation comes following the deadly shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County last fall.

A 14-year-old student has been arrested after bringing a gun to Apalachee High School, the same Georgia high school where a September shooting killed two teachers and two students and wounded others.

House Democrats say they support improving school security but are also pressing for gun safety measures, such as a proposal to penalize gun owners who fail to secure firearms that fall into the hands of children.

The legislature met with the backdrop of September's mass shooting at Apalachee High still fresh in lawmakers' minds.

Georgia’s General Assembly is being sworn in for a new two-year term on Monday, with 180 state representatives and 56 state senators taking office after winning election in November.
