Carroll County Almshouse and Farm, also known as the Carroll County Farm Museum, is a historic farm complex located at Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland. It consists of a complex of 15 buildings including the main house and dependencies.

It was the custom in 19th Century America to house the poor in a building called an almshouse since there was no welfare, housing subsidy, or food stamps as we have today. It was not until 1852 that the County Commissioners decided to borrow funds to build the Almshouse.

Sep 12, 2023 · In 1869, the Carroll County Board of Commissioners purchased two 250 acre farms for the purpose of establishing the county’s almshouse and jail. The property was located a mile from the Ossippee train depot. The almshouse and jail opened on February 1, 1870.

Today, visitors can explore the seven rooms in the farmhouse which depict the life of a middle-class farm family in the 1880s. They can also see exhibits in our Living History Center featuring historic trades that were once important to Carroll County’s economy.

Originally designed and constructed for use as the county alms house, it is a long, three-story, rectangular structure, nine bays wide at the first and second floor levels of both front and rear façades.

In 1965, Carroll County opened the first public farm museum in Maryland to celebrate the agricultural history of the region and in the process preserved the recently closed historic county almshouse.
