Louis Kahn (1901–1974) designed the renowned modernist building that is adjacent to the two neo-Gothic structures. The Yale University Art Gallery and Design Center was Kahn’s first significant commission and is widely considered his first masterpiece.

Completed in 1953 and celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, the Louis Kahn Building was Yale’s first modernist structure. The south wall, which runs along Chapel Street, is an almost windowless brick wall, whereas the north and west sides of the building are comprised mostly of windows framed by steel.

Jun 1, 2007 · As record noted 50 years ago, one of the building’s most distinctive features is its tetrahedral ceilings, which although muscular, seem to float overhead. These poured-in-place concrete elements integrate the mechanical systems with the building’s structure and make possible expansive and flexible galleries unencumbered by columns.
