About 7,800 years ago, the mountain that once stood where Crater Lake now is, Mount Mazama, blew its top in the greatest Cascades explosion it the past 600,000 years - 40 to 50 times greater than Mount St. Helens. The eruption was witnessed by the Klamath peoples that lived in the area, and is still remembered today by the descendants of those witnesses.
